Online consultations are a simply way to work smarter not harder, utilising technology to our advantage. They are not a replacement of our existing services, but rather an extension of them, making healthcare easier and more accessible to all.
What are online consultations?
Online consultations or telehealth, is the delivery of health care services through communication technologies such as phones, iPads, laptops and computers, to provide real time audio and video conferencing between patients and clinicians. It encompasses all aspects of a typical consultation you would expect to receive face-to-face in clinic such as assessment, diagnosis, treatment and education, all from the comfort of your own home or current location.
Who is Telehealth best suited for?
ANYBODY with a musculoskeletal condition and access to a device
As long as you have a decent camera, lighting and background, you’re well on your way to having your first virtual appointment
Typically online consultations have been used for those who live in regional, rural or remote areas of Australia where geographical location makes it difficult to receive specialist care close to home. However, in this day and age almost everybody has access to a device or technology that allows them to utilise this service to their own advantage when they are unable to attend in person.
Please note this is not a service for emergencies and you should seek appropriate medical assistance from your local emergency services as usual.
Online consultations have the power to overcome many barriers to access to physiotherapy services, and reduce the overall cost of musculoskeletal care in society.
- Amazing flexibility to suit your current needs
- Accessible to all
- Secure and private
- Simple to use
- Reduced wait times
- Saves travel time to appointments
- Reducing stress or strain on loved ones
- Is not impacted by physical contact issues e.g. COVID-19
- Empowers patients to manage their conditions
- Reduces the strain on the hospital system
- Beneficial to osteoarthritic populations
Overall evidence suggests real-time online consultations are actually superior to face-to-face consultations in physiotherapy management for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. Outcomes are equal to and not inferior to that to face-to-face consolations, making them a viable option for clinical management of musculoskeletal conditions.
Research emphasises that online consultations are not only a feasible way to carry out physiotherapy assessment, but also provide good to excellent validity and reliability in their measurements of pain, swelling, range of motion, strength, balance and functional outcomes.
There is evidence to suggest video-conferencing for physiotherapy treatment of musculoskeletal conditions provides quality interventions, higher patient satisfaction and delivers superior care in respects to physical function and disability.
Research also highlights the successful nature of online rehabilitation within rural communities and those in osteoarthritic populations such as hip and knee osteoarthritis.
